1. ASH SEPARATOR: Shovel out charcoal from your smoker to the ash can with the charcoal Basket installed, then shake and twist the charcoal basket by the handle using a hearth glove to protect your hands. Shake and twist the charcoal basket and your ash will fall through to the can below. (Note:This can be done with hot coals as well, but be very careful to do this in a location where fire can not spread).
2. CHARCOAL CHIMNEY: Use the charcoal basket as a charcoal chimney to start your charcoal before placing it into your smoker/grill. Simply place the charcoal basket onto a surface that will not burn or spread flame, add unlit charcoal to the charcoal basket, place some newspaper or other form of fire starter under the legs and light. It holds plenty of charcoal and lights it fast.
3.PORTABLE GRILL/TAILGATOR: Once you have hot coals in the charcoal basket, you can place the optional 12x20" cooking grate on the top into the notches. This will hold your grate in place and allow you to grill foods. (Note: because of the rectangle shape of the cooking grate, you can place foods on the side that is not over the hot coals as they achieve doneness. You can also lift or shift the grate for control advantage.
